Edsa 1 Remembered: 25 February 2013
On
the 27th anniversary of Edsa 1, we thank the Lord for the peaceful
change of government from the dictatorship back to democracy.
We, the people of our generation, should value and take care of the
people's freedom in a democratic society. The Catholic Church has been
among the leaders of Edsa 1, and nobody cried about the "separation of
church and state", except of course the dictatorship.
In this coming mid-term election, it is the duty of the Church to guide
people in the exercise of their right to vote to ensure a healthy and
functioning democracy in our country, through the check-and-balance
among the three branches of government, which is the very foundation of
people empowerment. Let us not allow the Executive to have effective
control of the Legislative and Judicial branches of government.
Let us vote for a senate and congress that will champion the foundation
of a true democratic government and not just kowtow to the dictates of
the executive, using the the country development funds as
"carrots-and-sticks".
It has happened in the passing into law
of the RH bill. Let it not happen again. Let us rise up and ensure a
truly democratic Philippines in this coming mid-term election.
